Seven New Companies Add 194 Jobs to Northern Nevada

Reno, Nev. (Dec. 4, 2014) - Seven new companies to grow in the Reno – Sparks area; six companies that recently relocated to Northern Nevada, and one company that is newly formed here, will collectively add 194 jobs in five years to the local economy.  Additionally, three of these companies will locate their headquarters operations in the Reno area.

The companies worked closely with the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) as they chose locations in Reno based on cost savings, business-friendly environment and access to local resources.

  • Cuco, LLC – designs, manufactures and distributes innovative products that utilize the intrinsic bactericidal properties of copper to address the unmet need of countering harmful effects of bacteria in three specific areas: Diabetic Health, Outdoor/Activity Wear and Institutional/Facility Care. The company has relocated its headquarters from California to Reno and plans to create up to 15 jobs in five years. Cuco was represented by Melissa Molineux of Colliers.
  • Fulcrum Sierra BioFuels – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fulcrum BioEnergy, is utilizing a game-changing process for converting municipal solid waste that would otherwise be landfilled, into renewable transportation fuels.  The construction ofFulcrum’s new plant in Storey County is scheduled to begin in January 2015.  Relocated from Pleasanton, California the company estimates 30 new jobs will be created during its first phase of operation.
  • Harris Welding Supply – a division of Harris Industrial Gases, is the largest independent supplier of industrial, medical, and specialty gases, welding equipment and supplies in the Greater Sacramento Area.  The company has expanded its operations from California to Storey County with plans to hire up to 50  employees.
  • Orest Express – is family owned and operated dry freight service provider since 2004. Headquartered in Illinois with primary service from Midwest-West Coast and Midwest-Southeast, their broad services enable them to meet the unique needs of their customers including truckload, less than truckload (LTL), warehousing, local cartage, 3PL brokerage and tradeshow service.  This new freight hub in Sparks will add up to 30 jobs in five years.  Orest was represented by Dave Simonsen of NAI Alliance.
  • Rubber Enterprises, a newly formed private company has chosen Reno for its headquarters and plans to create 21 jobs in five years.  The company manufactures and produces environment-friendly, odorless and recyclable tire rubber material (used tires) for use in a wide variety of products including athletic surfaces, pavers, automotive parts, landscaping, buildings, and asphalt.  Rubber was represented by Dickson Commercial Group.
  • Tecno Displays – specializes in standard and custom display showcases as well as custom store designs.  Founded in 1976, the company has extensive production and display experience and is heavily invested in modern machinery and technology. Tecno will relocate its headquarters and manufacturing to Sparks from Hayward, California, creating 30 new jobs. Tecno Display was represented by Dave Simonsen of NAI Alliance.
  • Whisper Jet Helicopters -manufactures a quiet technology helicopter aircraft for the military and emergency responders. The company’s single engine helicopters are designed with a proprietary technology that greatly reduces engine noise, hence the name ‘Whisper Jet.’ With a new transportation service that serves passengers in the Reno-Tahoe area, Whisper Jet will create 18 high-paying jobs in five years.  The company was represented by Steve Kucera and Mike Hoeck of NAI Alliance.

“I needed to satisfy three key objectives in deciding where to open my doors,” comments Reed Baumgarten, CEO of CuCo, LLC, “a business friendly culture, ability to grow and quality of life. With the help of Joel Grace at EDAWN, I was truly able to see Reno for the city that it is and the opportunity it that offers, a city where you can literally walk next door and shake the hand of fellow business owners and immediately engage in creating new opportunities, a city with engaged state and local leaders working side-by-side with the local business community to continually improve and grow and last but not least, a city located in one of the most beautiful areas in the world. As an outdoor enthusiast, the opportunities are endless. And if you want to rough it every now and then, it’s a pleasure to travel in and out of the Reno airport. I don’t know how else to put it but, it is “Refreshing Reno!”

Getting the attention of corporate executives in other states to move or start new operations in Northern Nevada is a key in EDAWN’s marketing strategy to create quality jobs in the area. Corporate headquarter relocations are especially valuable, creating a deeper connection of company leadership to the surrounding community and signaling more loyalty to the area.

“These seven new companies are small individually but collectively they provide almost 200 new jobs to the region and a wide array of diverse opportunities to job seekers in the area,” said Mike Kazmierski, CEO of EDAWN.  “While the large companies get the headlines, it is the smaller companies like these that make up the backbone of our economy,” he said.

Partners who were instrumental in assisting these companies move to Reno in partnership with EDAWN included the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Storey County, the City of Reno, and the City of Sparks.

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada is a private/ public partnership established in 1983 committed to recruiting, expanding and supporting newly forming quality companies that bring jobs to the region and have a positive impact on the quality of life in Greater Reno-Sparks-Tahoe.

EDAWN Announces UAV Company coming to Reno

RENO, Nev. (August 26, 2014) – The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) announced today that Ashima Devices, a Pasadena-based company known for its breakthrough research in advanced autonomous aerial vehicles, will be moving its headquarters and opening a research, testing and assembly facility in Reno, Nevada. This relocation is expected to bring up to 400 quality jobs to the area.

Ashima Devices Vice President, Larry B. Lambert credited Governor Sandoval’s Office of Economic Development and the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) with tipping the scales toward Nevada. “Nevada’s can-do attitude combined with a willing and ready workforce of educated, quality people who are interested in being part of the unmanned aerial vehicle revolution made it a perfect place to expand.” Chief Executive Officer, Mark Richardson, a former Cal-Tech professor who also currently serves as a co-investigator on the Mars Science Laboratory Rover program said, “We’re excited to be opening this new facility in Reno and in working with the University of Nevada collaboratively on upcoming projects that will help students hone their skills in conjunction with Ashima Devices and better prepare them for their entry into occupational fields focused on advanced robotics systems and control, computing sensing and communication systems and in the burgeoning field of UAV’s.

As increasingly sophisticated systems become available, unmanned aerial vehicles will come to be viewed as industrial tools, and not simply extensions of military programs. Six electrically powered ducted fan (jet) engines, encased in the small aircraft’s fuselage, propel the Ashima’s UAV’s that appear to be something between a Frisbee and a hockey puck. They are ‘finger safe’, making them literally the safest UAV to handle on the planet. The unique engine design provides safe, powerful, and eco-friendly propulsion. Advanced sensors provide HAZMAT responders the ability to know what hazardous materials they are encountering and in what concentration before sending people into harm’s way. Ashima Devices will complete testing and begin selling ground penetrating radar systems that will fly on its UAV’s in 2015. Saving lives threatened by improvised explosive devices and landmines worldwide will the change the nature of sweeping for explosive mines, separating the sweeper in distance from explosives while providing a far more accurate view of the object. The device is also anticipated to help law enforcement search for evidentiary objects that have been concealed underground.

“What an exciting day for Northern Nevada”, said, Mike Kazmierski, CEO of EDAWN.  “Ashima Devices is a great company that has tremendous potential and their decision to grow in Nevada is a testament to the many advantages this region has for the rapidly growing autonomous systems industry.  Nevada’s selection as one of just six FAA UAV test sites nationally has stimulated interest in the state and we believe that Ashima Devices is just the start of that industry growth in the region,” he said.

Ashima Devices began its corporate life in 2011 as a merging of NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory Scientists, professors from the California Institute of Technology, military special forces officers and law enforcement personnel, who focused on robust, affordable, autonomous, short-range, unmanned small aerial vehicles.

Dickson Commercial Announces Addition of New Partners

Dickson Commercial Group Logo

The partners of Dickson Realty have announced the formation of a new full service commercial real estate firm, Dickson Commercial Group, Inc. Prior to the formation of the new company, Dickson Commercial was housed under Dickson Realty. As part of the formation of the new company, local commercial broker veterans Scott Shanks, SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors), and Dominic Brunetti, CCIM (Commercial Investment Member) will join Tom and Harvey Fennell as the new firm’s managing partners. Shanks and Brunetti were previously principals with NAI Alliance, and Tom Fennell was previously with Dickson Realty, Inc. Harvey Fennell will remain as a broker with Dickson Realty, Inc. as well as a partner in Dickson Commercial Group, Inc.

“This is a significant move for Dickson Commercial Group,” said Tom Fennell. “With the addition of these two partners to our already experienced team of agents at Dickson, we are growing to become one of the area’s largest locally owned and operated commercial firms. Both Scott and Dominic have a great reputation and are well respected within the northern Nevada. We will continue to be an agent-centric company that puts a priority on providing our clients with the most in-depth commercial real estate knowledge and expertise available in our region. We have experience in this market and through collaborative efforts amongst our brokers, we are positioned to be more flexible to assist our clients in all areas of commercial real estate.”

Dominic Brunetti

After graduating from Stanford, Brunetti began his business career in Palo Alto, California. He and his wife moved to Reno for the quality of life and to direct the business development team for a local title insurance company before he transitioned into the commercial real estate brokerage industry.

“We made the decision to join the experienced team at Dickson Commercial Group for multiple reasons,” said Brunetti. “Dickson offered a tremendous infrastructure including technology, marketing and a number of other resources. More importantly, we wanted to be affiliated with a firm that has been in operation in Northern Nevada for over 40 years. The commercial real estate industry of Northern Nevada is a business built on relationships and reputation. DCG will provide the platform to allow its agents to capitalize on both.”

Shanks and Brunetti join an experienced team of commercial real estate agents including Fred Miller, SIOR, Ron Boles, CCIM, Sheila Colfer, CCIM, Don Welsh, CCIM, Randy WalkerLisamarie Wand, and fellow partners, Harvey and Tom Fennell.

Dickson Commercial Group with a group of investors purchased the three-story, 14,017 square foot office building at 333 Holcomb Ave. at the edge of Reno’s downtown and Midtown districts. After renovations, Dickson Commercial Group will move its offices to the second floor of this location. The third floor, totaling 5,500 square feet, will also be renovated and available for lease.

“We are pleased to be coming back to downtown Reno,” said Harvey Fennell. “Dickson Realty left downtown 20 years ago, but the time is right to return. We believe that the downtown area is going to experience significant growth and renovation in the next few years. What is happening in Midtown is exciting and we think it will continue. Locating the new commercial firm in Downtown Reno just made sense”.
